MLB approves CBD sponsorships in landmark change for sports leagues

MLB and its teams are now free to sell CBD sponsorships, a development likely to echo across the industry and open a new sponsorship category in pro sports. League officials told team marketers that CBDs are henceforth an “approved category” as long as they are certified by testing organization NSF to not have psychoactive levels of THC.

MLB is looking to grab a piece of the growing CBD market in the U.S. It’s unknown at this time what MLB teams or the league could get for a CBD deal. One optimistic estimate has the entire CBD market at $4.9B worldwide this year, exploding to $47B in ’28.

The Quest by Circadian Medicine to Make the Most of Our Body Clocks
  • Circadian rhythms, in other words, are relevant to more than sleep. But few realized how relevant until 2014, when a professor of pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania named John Hogenesch published a paper with his colleagues showing that almost half of the genes in mice produce proteins on a 24-hour schedule.
  • This means that as the clock genes cycle through their functions, their work is activating or deactivating thousands of other, non clock genes in consistent daily patterns. The finding astonished circadian experts.
  • After giving a talk about the paper at a conference, Hogenesch went to the bathroom and encountered at the urinal Horacio de la Iglesia, a prominent biologist at the University of Washington with decades of circadian research to his name. De la Iglesia was incredulous about what he had just heard. Until then, it was thought that at most 30 percent of our genome was under circadian regulation. The mouse study implied that the number was far greater. “This was a mind-blowing idea,” de la Iglesia says.
“New generation” of consumers driving demand for ingestible skincare, research shows
  • Demand for ingestible products is growing as consumers adopt more holistic attitudes to skincare, research by Lycored has found.
  • The research suggests that growing demand for beauty-from-within is rooted in increasingly holistic, health-focused attitudes to skincare. Seven in ten (70%) of the survey respondents said they used skincare products to keep their skin healthy and 69% said it was “to feel good about myself.” This “feelgood factor” was particularly evident among consumers in the 18-24 age bracket, 82% of whom said they used products to feel good about themselves, and women (78% compared to 59% of men).
  • Caroline Schroeder, Marketing Communications Manager at Lycored, said: “The new generation of skincare consumers is much more interested in holistic skin health than traditional cosmetic signs of beauty. This focus on ‘from within’ factors has increased in recent years, especially during the pandemic, during which many consumers have valued overall health and self-care more than outward appearance. It’s a major reason for the boom in demand for ingestible skincare.”

Johnson & Johnson asks FDA to ‘chip away’ at cannabinoid regulations

Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson has joined the chorus of businesses asking U.S. health regulators to develop basic safety rules for cannabinoids in foods and dietary supplements.

Speaking Tuesday to an advisory panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, an executive at the company’s pharmaceutical arm suggested the FDA could “start to chip away” at the unanswered questions about cannabinoids such as CBD.

Minnesota House Leader Says New Law Allowing THC Edibles Was ‘Intentional’ Step Toward Marijuana Legalization

The Democratic leader of the Minnesota House of Representatives said that passing the state’s newly enacted law allowing low-THC edibles for adults was an “intentional” legislative step meant to open the door to broader marijuana legalization that is opposed by many Republican colleagues who ultimately voted for the incremental reform.

At a press briefing, House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler (DFL), who has consistently championed legalization in the legislature, emphasized that the new legislation was debated and passed in a public forum, so GOP members who have since expressed reservations about the edibles provisions after voting in favor of the bill don’t exactly have an excuse.

Largest Cannabinoid Trial On Pain Finds Significant Improvement

The OBX Pain Study on CBD and Rare Cannabinoids is the largest ever randomized, controlled clinical trial of cannabinoids for pain, involving more than 1600 participants from across the U.S. and the first of its kind to examine the synergistic impact of rare cannabinoids like Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabigerol (CBG) on pain.

The trial included 6 product arms, which all contained CBD at 40 mg per serving. Most arms also contained varying levels of rare cannabinoids, including CBG and CBC.

InMed says peer-reviewed study highlights potential role of rare cannabinoids THCV, CBC on skin conditions
  • The researchers used a widely recognized in vitro model of human keratinocytes, and studied how these cannabinoids interacted with several receptors including cannabinoid receptors and other endocannabinoid system components.
  • Each cannabinoid had distinct biological activity via the endocannabinoid system, the researchers said.
  • THCV was shown to perform as a cannabinoid receptor 1 antagonist and have a high affinity for the human transient receptor potential vanilloid .
