The legal cannabis industry is growing rapidly in the field of wellness, and women’s health is a huge focus. Given that women’s health is an unmet need, there has been a rush to develop products. Women, who have often been underserved by the medical and pharmaceutical industries, have much to gain from the acceptance of cannabidiol as treatment.

Cannabinoids derived from a plant are termed phytocannabinoids. These cannabinoids interact with receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS). CB1 and CB2 are the most prevalent receptors and scientists are beginning to uncover the factors that can play a critical role in their function. Cannabinoids are also known to bind to various transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels that are involved in skin function such as pain, temperature, itching, and regulation of hair growth.

In female reproductive organs, CB1 receptors proliferate externally around the ovaries and the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are found in the ovarian cortex, medulla, and follicles. Both CB1 and CB2 have been identified to influence the operation of female reproductive organs.

  • The endocannabinoid system is abundant in female reproductive organs.
  • When activated by cannabinoids, it can induce pain relief and reduce inflammation.
  • When formulated precisely and designed with purpose, vaginal products can be an extremely effective way to ease pain or to increase pleasure during intercourse.

For women, a major advantage for the delivery of cannabinoids through the vagina is the high bioavailability. When compared to oral administration, vaginal topicals can deliver cannabinoids more quickly and in higher doses to the bloodstream. Cannabinoids introduced to the vaginal tract are transported across the vaginal membrane via transcellular (through the cell) and/or paracellular (in between the cell) routes. Cannabinoids enter the bloodstream through the lamina propria layer, where the exterior iliac vein unites with the common iliac vein.

ENDOCANNABINOIDS IN THE UTERUS

The uterus and ovaries are full of endocannabinoid receptors for both CB1 and CB2. These receptors are sensitive to both the cannabinoids in cannabis as well as the natural endocannabinoids our body produces, like anandamide.

Anandamide is an endocannabinoid often called the “bliss molecule”. The uterus has the highest level of anandamide in the body during ovulation, and anandamide is essential for conception and fertility.

We can naturally support the health of our endocannabinoid system, and bring ease to our reproductive organs and cycles, by harnessing the natural power of wellness through healthy and legal cannabis products like CBD.  CBD is promising for easing the normal discomforts of menstrual cramps and perimenopause. Cramping, PMS, and other cyclical discomforts worsen due to inflammation in the body causing prostaglandins. CBD, anandamide, and cannabinoids reduce inflammation and create ease in the body.

  • CBD Eases Premenstrual Pain: Not every woman suffers from PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, but those who do are often left debilitated by the symptoms. Almost all women want a way to deal with aches and discomforts that come with hormonal shifts. Amazingly, CBD works to counteract all of the major symptoms of PMS.
  • First, it fights inflammation all over the body, which helps treat headaches, upset stomachs, and physical sensitivities.
  • At the same time, CBD naturally elevates one’s mood, helping to defeat mood swings and minor depression, both common PMS symptoms.
  • Finally, CBD helps women with PMS get enough restful, healing sleep, something that’s often hard to come by. Women often find that it’s helpful to medicate with CBD both before and during their menstrual period for the best symptom relief.
