CBD Gummies vs Beverages vs Capsules:
Which Should You Make First?

  • By Jeremy Amos

Don't just launch - launch smart.

You've decided to launch a CBD brand.

You've sourced quality CBD isolate. You understand dosing. You're ready to create products.

But which product should you make first?

  • Gummies? Everyone wants gummies. The market is huge. Consumers love them.
  • Beverages? CBD drinks are trending. Seltzers, coffees, energy drinks—beverages are growing fast.
  • Capsules? Less exciting, but straightforward. Traditional supplement format.

Here's what most new brands do: they choose based on what they think will sell best.

Here's what experienced brands do: they choose based on what they can actually formulate, produce, and bring to market successfully.

Those are very different decision criteria.

We've worked with hundreds of brands launching CBD products. We've seen which formats work for new brands—and which ones create expensive, avoidable problems.

This guide helps you make a smarter choice.

The Decision Framework

Before comparing formats, here's what actually matters for new brands:

  • Startup investment - Limited budget means you may only get one shot. Choose wrong, waste money.
  • Technical complexity - Complex = more ways to fail. Simple = higher success rate.
  • Common failure points - Every failure costs money. Some formats forgive mistakes. Others don't.
  • Time to market - Faster to market = faster revenue = less cash burn while waiting.
  • Regulatory considerations - Some formats face stricter oversight. Some states regulate certain formats differently.

Capsules: The Smart Starting Point

Capsules aren't sexy. Nobody gets excited about them the way they do gummies or beverages.

But here's what capsules offer that other formats don't:

  • Simplicity CBD isolate + carrier oil + capsule shell. That's it. Minimal equipment, straightforward process, very little that can go wrong.
  • Precise dosing Each capsule contains an exact dose. No settling issues, no batch variation, no "this gummy has more CBD than that one" problems.
  • Forgiving formulation CBD dissolves readily in oils. No water solubility concerns, no emulsification challenges, no texture variables.
  • Fast to market 2-4 weeks from formulation to finished product. No waiting for molds, no complex processing.
  • Long shelf life Properly formulated CBD capsules remain stable for 18-24 months. No degradation worries.
  • Lower minimums Co-packers have lower minimums for capsules than gummies or beverages—easier entry point for small brands.

When Capsules Make Sense

Start with capsules if:

✓ You're a new brand proving concept

✓ You need to get to market quickly

✓ You want predictable, reliable results

✓ You're targeting supplement-minded customers

Skip capsules if:

✗ Your customer won't take pills

✗ You need strong shelf presence in retail

✗ "Fun factor" is essential to your brand

Gummies: Popular But Trickier Than They Look

Gummies dominate retail CBD. Consumers love them. Brands want them.

The problem: gummies are significantly harder to formulate and produce than most new brands expect.

The challenges:

  • CBD distribution CBD isolate doesn't stay evenly distributed through gummy mixture. Without proper technique, some gummies end up with 15mg, others 5mg—when you're selling 10mg products. That's a quality control problem.
  • Gelation and texture Too much gelatin = hard and difficult to chew. Too little = soft, sticky, won't hold shape. Wrong temperature = doesn't set properly. And texture changes over shelf life—what's perfect at week one may be unpleasant at week eight.
  • Stability Gummies can dry out, get sticky, absorb moisture, or lose potency faster than oil-based products. Controlling shelf life requires real attention to packaging, storage conditions, and moisture barriers.
  • Equipment and minimums Consistent gummy production requires more specialized equipment than capsules. Co-packers often require higher minimums—meaning a bigger financial commitment before you know if products will sell.
  • Higher failure rate More variables = more ways to fail. Budget accordingly. A failed gummy batch is an expensive lesson.

When Gummies Make Sense

Start with gummies if:

✓ You have meaningful budget to invest in getting it right

✓ You're willing to work with an experienced co-packer

✓ You've validated demand (people want your product before you invest)

✓ You need retail shelf presence

✓ Gummies are clearly what your target customer wants

Skip gummies if:

✗ Budget is tight

✗ You need fast time to market

✗ You don't have manufacturing experience or co-packer relationship

✗ You're not ready to risk batch failures during development

Beverages: Highest Risk, Highest Complexity, Highest Reward

CBD beverages are the fastest-growing format. Seltzers, coffees, teas, energy drinks - the category is exploding.

And they're the hardest CBD format to execute successfully.

The core challenge:

  • CBD isolate is oil-soluble, not water-soluble. Add CBD oil to water and it separates, floats, and delivers inconsistent doses. Solving this requires water-compatible CBD and proper formulation chemistry—both of which add complexity and cost.
  • Beyond the solubility problem:
  • Stability over shelf life Even properly formulated beverages can separate, cloud, or deliver inconsistent doses over time. Maintaining stability across a 12-18 month shelf life is genuinely difficult.
  • Taste and mouthfeel Water-compatible CBD can interact with flavors in unexpected ways—creating bitterness, metallic notes, or off-putting mouthfeel. Masking these issues adds cost and complexity.
  • Regulatory landscape Beverages face more scrutiny than supplements. State regulations vary significantly. Some states restrict CBD beverages. The regulatory picture is more complex than capsules or gummies.
  • Production requirements Beverages require specialized equipment, controlled environments, and often cold-chain distribution. The infrastructure investment is substantial.
  • Most CBD beverages fail. Not because the idea is bad—because execution is genuinely hard.

When Beverages Make Sense

Consider beverages if:

✓ You have significant budget and runway

✓ You have beverage industry experience or strong co-packer relationship

✓ You have built-in distribution (coffee shops, gyms, wellness retail)

✓ You can differentiate beyond "CBD beverage"

✓ You understand the regulatory landscape in your target markets

Skip beverages if:

✗ You're a new brand

✗ Budget is limited

✗ You need fast time to market

✗ This is your first cannabinoid product

The Smart Launch Path

Here's what works for most new brands:

Phase 1: Capsules (Months 1-3) Prove you can formulate, produce, and sell. Build a customer base. Generate revenue. Learn what your market actually wants. Minimal investment, minimal risk.

Phase 2: Add Gummies (Months 4-8) You've proven demand. You have revenue to reinvest. You understand your customer. Now you can justify the higher investment with confidence.

Phase 3: Consider Beverages (Months 9+) You're an established brand. You have cash flow, a customer base, and possibly retail distribution. Now beverages make sense as a high-risk, high-reward addition.

Why this order works:

  • Each phase funds the next
  • You learn what you need before you need it
  • You validate demand before big investments
  • Success compounds

Most brands that win long-term started with the simplest format—not the sexiest one.

How Much CBD Isolate You'll Need

Capsules: (# capsules × mg per capsule) ÷ 1,000,000 = kg needed Add 10% for waste

Gummies: (# gummies × mg per gummy) ÷ 1,000,000 = kg needed Add 15% for waste

Beverages: (# beverages × mg per serving) ÷ 1,000,000 = kg needed Add 10% for waste Note: beverages require water-compatible CBD, not standard isolate
